                                   A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH (through 1991's 50th Anniversary)

1937                       Summer The Board of American Missions of the United Lutheran Church in America conducted 
                                a survey for a possible ULCA congregation. The survey indicated perusal of the matter.

1940                       March Rev. Dwight H. Shelhart was sent to Green Bay to help develop a congregation.

June 16                 First worship service conducted at the old Seventh Day Adventist church at West
                                Walnut and Ashland Avenue.
                                Shortly thereafter, this building is sold to the VFW and re-rented for services.

1941 Feb.              The Board of American Missions approved the request of the congregation to organize
                                officially.

March 9                 Dr. R. H. Gerberding, President of the Synod of the Northwest of the ULCA, was
                                present to preach at a service at which 48 Common Service Books donated by Lake
                                Park Lutheran Sunday School in Milwaukee, a silver Communion service donated by
                                Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton, and the brass altar cross, candlesticks, and silver 
                                baptistery, purchased with monies given by the Women's Missionary Society of the
                                Wisconsin Conference of our Synod, were dedicated.

March 30               Business meeting held at which congregation selected its name, adopted its
                                constitution, and elected its first Church Council.

April 2                    The Church Council executed a formal certificate of incorporation.

April 6                    Formal Birthday of Resurrection United Evangelical Lutheran Church (Palm Sunday of
                                that year).

April 10                  The Church Council applied for membership in The English Evangelical Lutheran Synod 
                             of the Northwest.

May 25                   The congregation voted to call its first regular pastor - the Rev. J. Woodrow Jacobson.

July 27                   Pastor Jacobson installed as pastor.

Oct. 22                   Women's Missionary Society organized.

1942, Nov. 16       Church Council announced that the property at 1026 Shawano Avenue had been 
                             purchased with the aid of the church extension funds loaned by the ULCA's Board of
                             American Missions. Cost was $6,200.

1943, Dec. 24       The first service in the remodeled building was conducted.

1944, Sept. 24      Formal dedication of the building.

1945, Feb. 8         The congregation purchased a parsonage at 516 Hubbard Street for $7,040 plus $375
                              for garage materials.

Nov. 1                    Pastor Jacobson left for First Congregational Church, West Allis, Wisconsin.

Dec. 1                    Pastor Kraemer was called to serve Resurrection.
1946, Jan 23        News article in "Green Bay Press Gazette":  "The Rev. Irwin Kraemer, pastor of Resurrection United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1026 Shawano Ave., was a civilian again today, following expiration of his terminal leave from the Army, in which he had been a chaplain since 1942. He retains his major's commission in the Organized Reserve. As a senior chaplain of the 300th General Hospital in Africa and Italy, Maj. Kraemer knows how it feels to be air-bombed and attacked by submarines. The hospital handled most of the casualties from the Cassino and Anzio beachhead battles.

1948, July             Pastor Kraemer left for Resurrection Lutheran Church, Milwaukee.
Sept. 15                 Pastor Defenderfer began his work.

1949, Sept.11       Ground was broken for the new church.
Oct. 23                   The cornerstone of the new church was laid.

1950, April 23       The church was formally dedicated. Pastor Defenderfer made the chancel furnishings.

1951, Feb. 1         Pastor Defenderfer left.

April 15                  Pastor Tingley arrived.

1954, Oct. 17        Pastor Tingley left for St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Neenah.

Nov. 7                    Pastor Kloese assumed pastoral responsibilities.

1955, June 26      Pastor Kloese and family took up residency in the new parsonage at136 N.Antoinette St.

Sept. 18                 Parsonage is formally dedicated.

1958, July 27        The congregation dedicated 125 copies of the New Service Book and Hymnal.

Nov. 23                  The congregation burned its first mortgage.

1960, Dec. 11       A special congregational meeting is held to consider buying the house and property at
                             1016 Shawano Avenue for use as a parish house and later for parking. Purchase price
                              is $8,000 and was approved.

Dec. 26                  Pastor Kloese left for St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Madison, Wisconsin.

1961, June 1        Pastor Ellsworth E. Freyer began to serve the congregation.

Sept. 10                 A special meeting was held to authorize spending $2,000 to remodel the building at
                             1016 Shawano Avenue to comply with state and city codes for use as a Sunday School
                             and for meeting purposes. Remodeling was completed in October.

Nov. 5                    Sunday School building is first put in use.

Nov. 12                  Dedication of Sunday School building.

1963, Jan. 1          The new Lutheran Church in America had official beginning. American Evangelical
                             Lutheran Church, Augustana Synod, Suomi Synod, and ULCA merged. Resurrection
                             became a part of Wisconsin - Upper Michigan Synod of Lutheran Churches of America.

April 29                  A special congregational meeting approved plans to consult architects, conduct a
                             survey of the congregation to determine needs in expanded building and to present
                             written recommendations to congregation for its approval.

June 27                 The congregation approved the purchase of the house and property at 1018 Shawano Av.

1964, Nov. 22       Ground was broken for expansion.

1965, June 6        Cornerstone is laid for the expansion.

Sept. 19                 The new building is formally dedicated.

1967, Oct. 29        Pastor Freyer left for Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Racine, Wisconsin.

1968, Jan. 26       Rev. Raymond Francies assumed pastoral duties until March 29, 1970.

1970, July 1          Rev. Thomas Warme served as pastor until September 21, 1973.

1973, January      The congregation votes to allow all confirmed members to vote in congregational
                             meetings and to serve on the Church Council regardless of age.

Feb. 16                  Rev. John G. Fondrliak arrived to serve Resurrection.

1975                       The congregation agreed to sponsor four Vietnamese families.
1976                       We began our annual "Advent Families" project.

1978                       Resurrection entered into an agreement with the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program of
                             Brown County concerning the use of a portion of our facility for its Homebound Meals
                             project.

1979, Feb. 25       The Lutheran Book of Worship hymnals were dedicated and put to use.

1980                       A Literacy Workshop took place to train 50 people to tutor. The Literacy Council of
                             Brown County later grew out of that workshop.

1981, May 3          Resurrection celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a special service. Pastor Jacobson 
                             returned to preach that day.

1982                       The congregation voted at its annual meeting to offer Holy Communion at all services 
                             every Sunday.

1983                       The ceiling is lowered and new carpeting is installed as we began transforming the old
                             sanctuary into a lounge for meeting, classes, and other uses.
                             In September we began our second joint program with Brown County Senior Citizen's
                             Nutrition program. We became a distribution center for surplus government 
                             commodities, a program that continues to present.

1987                       The women's group (LCW) disbanded as an organization. However, three of its Bible
                             study/fellowship circles continue to meet. An Aid Association for Lutherans branch
                             was formed and has sponsored many fellowship events and projects over the years.

1988                       On January 1 the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America had its official
                             beginning. The American Lutheran Church (ALC), the Association of Evangelical
                             Lutheran Church (AELC), and the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) merged.
                             Resurrection became part of the East Central Wisconsin Synod (later changed to East
                             Central Synod of Wisconsin to avoid confusion with the national church body known 
                             as the Wisconsin Synod).

1990                       In September we "paid in full" our mortgage and on December 2 (the first Sunday in
                             Advent) we burned our mortgage.

1991                       With the theme "Lift High the Cross" we celebrate our 50th year. Along with inviting 
                             our ordained "children" back to preach at various services, we celebrated with a 
                             special service on April 28th where many of our previous pastors, ordained children,"
                             and members of our congregation attended. A banquet followed where many had the
                             opportunity to reminisce with us.
